We take pride in offering seats that are highly rated on Consumer Reports and highly regarded by the car seat installation experts. Infant car seats take your baby from birth until 1 year of age (minimum). In Canada, by law, a child must be in a rear facing seat until 1 year of age. You can be ticketed by the authorities should you not abide by that rule. In actual fact the longer you can keep your baby in the rear facing position, the safer your child will be. This is because the back of the car seat will take the brunt of the impact should there be a crash. If your baby is facing frontward, it is your child's front that will take the majority of the pressure. Although parents can't seem to wait to turn their child front facing ( it seems to be some kind of milestone) safety experts recommend keeping your child rear facing for as long as possible. The majority of seats hold babies rear facing, up to 22 pounds but some seats (Britax Roundabout) can keep them in the rear facing position until 30 pounds. Another tidbit of information- the middle spot in the back seat is the safest place to put any car seat as that is the furthest position from the car doors which could be impacted in a crash.
When purchasing a car seat, it's always best to try it out in your car before you leave the store. The way it fits will differ from car to car. The fit is based on a number of factors such as the slope of your car's seat, the depth of your car's seat, the tilt of the infant seat and other factors. You want the tightest fit possible keeping in mind that an infant seat should be snug where it joins the back of your car's seat and will move at the other side. In a crash the back of infant seat is designed to move toward the car seat's back and “encase” your child.
At Wee Travel we offer a number of different models of infant seats because we understand that our customers have different needs. We have some that work with our travel systems, some that hold heavier babies and some that are best suited for very small babies. Wee Travel provides car seats to BC Women and Children's Hospital and have purchased special seats at their request. Please give us a call should you have any questions.
