The Latest News on H1N1 - Canada

With all the information and misinformation going around about H1N1, Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals has spent alot of time on the Internet trying to separate fact from fiction so we can make some informed decisions the H1N1 vaccine. We finally came across a site that we feel confident about referring you to! todaysparent.com and canadianparent.com have a Flu Centre where you can post your flu questions for Dr. Bob Bortolussi, professor of pediatrics at Dalhousie University in Halifax and chair of the Infectious Disease and Immunization Committee for the Canadian Pediatric Society. He offers very clear and succinct answers to the questions many of us have, and there are numerous questions and answers to read through. Additionally, you can also find the latest news from Health Canada on H1N1, as well as general information and provincial updates.

Boomers Baby Blankets and Burp Cloths

Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals (Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto) has found some great CANADIAN handmade blankets, bibs and burp cloths for the babies in your life. Thanks to Boomers Baby, you and your wee ones will look hip and stylish toting these about. The patterns are gorgeous and the blankets come in two weights - there are winter ones for the colder nights and summer ones for those hot summer nights (that we have been so lucky to have this summer in Vancouver)!  Best of all, the material is organic cotton and bamboo fleece and the filling is made from a corn based material.  Prices start at $40 for the blankets and $12 for burp cloths. Watch for bibs coming soon.

Canadian Car Seat Safety Regulations

The other day I was walking by a parked car and something caught my attention. A kitchen booster (yes, the plastic ones you use for eating) was strapped into the back seat with the seat belt and was being used as the car seat. I waited around a while for the owner to come back but eventually gave up and continued down the street completely stunned and appalled. I’ve also seen a bouncy chair being used as a car seat. Different countries and even Canadian provinces have different car seat regulations. While some may balk at them, the regulations are there for good reason, and there is good reason to NEVER use a kitchen booster or bouncy chair in replace of a car seat. After all, isn’t your child the most precious of all cargo?

Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals has certified car seat installers on staff. Here are a couple of key things to remember to insure the safest, secure attachment of a car or booster seat:

  • Know the age and weight of your child.  The height is important as well but as long as your child’s head remains at least 1 inch below the top of the seat, that is suitable.
  • ALWAYS, refer to the car seat manual and your car’s manual.  Read both before installing the seat. All cars have been tested with child seats and they will tell you the best position to install the seat, where the anchor bolt is, etc.  Don’t guess. When in doubt, whatever you do, don’t make up some system that “appears” safe. It won’t be.
  • Do NOT use both a seatbelt and latch system to secure your car or booster seat. Cars have NOT been tested using both a seatbelt and the UAS system at the same time. You may think it’s safer but that may not be the case.
  • Some cities have locations where you can go to have your installation reviewed. Check with your automobile association for more information.

Hanging Highchairs

Hanging high chairs seem to be the hottest new baby trend. Great for traveling, small to pack, these hangers guarantee your child has a safe, clean, comfortable seat when you’re out and about.

Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals (Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria) has come across two that we are particularly fond of.  The Phil & Teds Meetoo, is a really lightweight (2 lbs), is made of aluminum and nylon, and clamps on to any table with C-clamp attachments. It comes with a 3-point safety harness and is good for kids up to 3 years or 40 lbs.  This retails for $70 Cdn.

The Zooper Hook-on Chair comes with a four point harness and attaches to the table with a spring loaded locks and tightening knobs. It looks a little more plush and padded than the Meetoo, and retails for $60 Cdn.

Watch for the Phil & Teds Wriggle Wrapper coming soon. This innovative 3 in 1 portable wrapper lets your wee one sit, sleep and fee while you are on the run. It wraps around yoru waist or a chair for hands free feeding, and also has extendable straps that will fit around most single beds to keep your child from rolling off.  Looks a bit like a restraint in this case, but the idea is clever!

Writerings

If you’re a mom that’s into funky jewelry, then Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals has found just the ring for you. Before you leave the house, pop on the writering by Diego Bisso, and you’ll never again have the one-handed challenge of rummaging through your diaper bag searching for a pen to take down that all important phone number while trying to balance a latte and your squirmy little one in the other. Interesting idea although you may need to have one sent from Spain.

Willi Lilli Buddy

Australia seems to be the land of great inventions, especially for babies. The Willi Lilli Buddy is another one of those fantastic must-haves for traveling parents (at least Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals thinks so). It’s a portable highchair, elevated floor pad (really a simplified bouncy chair), changing pad and shopping buggy seat all in one. It comes in a carry case with an inflatable booster cushion and includes a 5-point harness. Be sure to check this out, because this bud’s going to become your new best friend…but you’ll have to get it from Australia!

Loopa Gyro No-Spill Bowl

Now here is something that Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals thinks every traveling parent should have. It looks like a UFO, so your kids will love it. But the Loopa Gyro is actually a revolutionary bowl that keeps the snacks in the bowl and off the floor no matter how your child grabs, turns, swivels, dips and spins it. That means no more dealing with tears or hungry tummies when you’re on the go and the snack bag mistakenly gets dumped upside down on the car floor or pavement! Sells online for $9.99.

MomSpit No-Rinse Cleanser

Now this is amazing. At least we at Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals think so. MomSpit is a no-rinse cleanser which lets you clean your little one anytime, no matter where you are - no water or sink needed. It works like magic and smells amazing. Just rub a little onto hands or face. Dirt will disappear. No rinse needed. Its antimicrobial properties leave skin clean, fresh, moisturized and smelling yummy. It comes in great scents: Fig and Green Tea; Lemon and White Tea, and there’s unscented, too. It contains no alcohol, mousses brilliantly, absorbs quickly and feels great. How can you NOT have this in your diaper bag?
